Alcuin was an Anglo-Latin poet, educator, and cleric who, as head of the Palatine school established by Charlemagne at Aachen, introduced the traditions of Anglo-Saxon humanism into western Europe. He was the foremost scholar of the revival of learning known as the Carolingian Renaissance.
Alcuin of York ( / ˈælkwɪn /; Latin: Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus; c. 735 – 19 May 804) – also called Ealhwine, Alhwin, or Alchoin – was a scholar, clergyman, poet, and teacher from York, Northumbria. He was born around 735 and became the student of Archbishop Ecgbert at York.

Alcuin was probably born around the year 740,¹ in or very near to York in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria. From a young age he was entrusted to the familia of clergy that served the cathedral in the city, perhaps because of the early death of his parents: this became his home and it left an indelible impression.
Not long after Alcuin’s death a monk wrote an anonymous biography, The Life of Alcuin, which is more helpful for appreciating Alcuin’s influence and legacy than for providing a full account of his life. As for recent scholarship, the most important overview is Bullough 2004, yet it is neither an accessible nor a complete biography.
