    By 1972 sisters Anita and Ruth had made it a quartet, and their debut album, The Pointer Sisters (1973), spawned their first hit song, “Yes We Can Can.” The group went on to collect the Grammy Award for best country vocal for the crossover hit “Fairytale” (1974), making them the first African American act to win that category.
    The Pointer Sisters were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005. In November 2000, the sisters lost their mother, Sarah. In 2003, sister Anita lost her only child Jada to cancer. Jada was the subject of the 1973 song "Jada". On April 11, 2006, June, who suffered from drug addiction, died of cancer at the age of 52.
    Anita Pointer, one of the Grammy award-winning Pointer Sisters whose string of hits included Automatic and I’m So Excited, has died aged 74. She was surrounded by family at her Beverly Hills home in California when she died on New Year’s Eve, her publicist, Roger Neal, said. In a statement, her family said they were deeply saddened by the loss.
    The Pointer Sisters were featured on the 1977 album Saffo Music by Italian R&B singer Lara Saint Paul and produced by Leon Ware, with bass by Chuck Rainey, guitar by Ray Parker Jr. and mixed by Bill Conti. It was released in Italy under LASAPA records.
