    All Blacks great Sir Colin Meads, who was named New Zealand's best rugby player of the 20th Century, has died of pancreatic cancer, aged 81. The former second row played 55 Tests within 133 games for the All Blacks between 1957 and 1971.

    Meads's iconic status in New Zealand society was recognised in 2001 when he was made a New Zealand Companion of Merit (the equivalent of a knighthood). In 2009 the government reintroduced the former system of titles and Colin Meads accepted the title of ‘Sir’.

    In 2009 the government reintroduced the former system of titles and Colin Meads accepted the title of ‘Sir’. He stated, however, that unlike his former team-mates Wilson Whineray and Brian Lochore, he didn't want to be addressed as 'Sir' . They, he argued, deserved the title as they were ‘perfect gentlemen’, whereas he was ‘a bit rougher’.
    He was known for his unstinting work as a sheep farmer, showing the stamina of his great-grandfather Zachariah Meads, who at the age of 12 had left the family home in Wellington after a row with his father, walking 120 miles before reaching Wanganui, where he became a farmer, an occupation taken up by Meads’ grandfather and then his father, Vere.
