Danish folklore consists of folk tales, legends, songs, music, dancing, popular beliefs, myths and traditions communicated by the inhabitants of towns and villages across the country, often passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth.
In Denmark, folklore had previously been collected more or less sporadically, but in the middle of the 19th century, NFS Grundtvig's son, Svend Grundtvig (1824-1883), took the initiative to systematically collect folklore in Denmark, and he established himself as the central figure for the collection and exploration of folklore.
Our archive of folklore tells the story of ordinary people’s lives and contains the folktales, songs and traditions we share as Danes. You are welcome to contact us if you need help and guidance for search and lending or have questions about our collections.
