Frederick III (born March 18, 1609, Haderslev, Den.—died Feb. 9, 1670, Copenhagen) was the king of Denmark and Norway (1648–70) whose reign saw the establishment of an absolute monarchy, maintained in Denmark until 1848.
He was born in Paris and was trained there and in Geneva as a goldsmith and enameller. Between 1659 and 1681 he lived in Denmark, working for the Royal Court. Frederik III was interested in France, and Rosenborg, which was the Royal family’s favorite residence in Copenhagen, was modernised in the French style.
Frederick III was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1452, the first since the death of Emperor Sigismund. His ascension to the role of Emperor came with the stipulation that should the previous queen of Bohemia (wife of Albert V of the Albertine line) give birth to a male heir, Frederick would become his guardian.
