Ninety years ago, the most famous dandy in the history of British Africa died in Kenya when his plane crashed with his loyal servant Kamau. His name was Denys Finch Hatton and, made famous by Karen Blixen's famous novel 'My Africa', he looks like the actor Robert Redford in the collective imagination.
Denys George Finch-Hatton MC (24 April 1887 – 14 May 1931) was a British aristocratic big-game hunter and the lover of Baroness Karen Blixen (also known by her pen name, Isak Dinesen), a Danish noblewoman who wrote about him in her autobiographical book Out of Africa, first published in 1937. In the book, his name is hyphenated: "Finch-Hatton".
Dinesen is enraptured with Finch Hatton's intelligence, book talk and charm. But as usual, the man can't commit: In his 30s, he's become a famous white hunter and has taken up flying, the better to lead rich American tourists (the sort Hemingway wrote about) deeper into the bush.
In the book, his name is hyphenated: "Finch-Hatton". Denys was born in Prince of Wales Terrace, Kensington on 24 April 1887. Finch Hatton was the second son and third child of Henry Stormont Finch-Hatton, 13th Earl of Winchilsea and his wife, the former Anne Codrington, daughter of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Codrington.
