The Gambia River (formerly known as the River Gambra, French: Fleuve Gambie, Portuguese: Rio Gâmbia) is a major river in West Africa, running 1,120 kilometres (700 mi) from the Fouta Djallon plateau in north Guinea westward through Senegal and The Gambia to the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Banjul. It is navigable for about half that length.

It divides the country into two parts. The river itself has salt water around Banjul towards the Atlantic ocean and fresh water in the inland towards it source.

Stretching some 1,100km (684 miles) from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean at Denton Bridge to the interior where it gets its source in the Fouta Djallon highlands of Guinea, the River Gambia is the lifeblood of The Gambia. However, the history and uses of this highly navigable narrow passage in West Africa dates back centuries.
