Tourette syndrome or Tourette's syndrome (abbreviated as TS or Tourette's) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood or adolescence. It is characterized by multiple movement (motor) tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. Common tics are blinking, coughing, throat clearing, sniffing, and facial movements.
About 20% of people with Tourette syndrome do not realize that they have tics. Tics that appear early in the course of TS are often confused with allergies, asthma, vision problems, and other conditions.
The prognosis for Tourette syndrome is generally positive, as tics typically remit by adulthood, but other neuropsychiatric conditions may persist.
These are called tics. Currently, there is no cure for Tourette's syndrome, but treatment can help manage the symptoms. Often, the symptoms develop in childhood or adolescence and sometimes they disappear over time. The condition is more common amongst boys.
