    As early as 1200, fertile soils and regular rainfall in the south fostered the formation of several large centralized kingdoms, including Buganda, from which the country derives its name. Muslim traders from Egypt reached northern Uganda in the 1820s, and Swahili merchants from the Indian Ocean coast arrived in the south by the 1840s.
    Although landlocked, Uganda contains many large lakes. Besides Lakes Victoria and Kyoga, there are Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and the smaller Lake George. It lies almost completely within the Nile basin. The Victoria Nile drains from Lake Victoria into Lake Kyoga and thence into Lake Albert on the Congolese border.

    Uganda averages about 1,100 meters (3,609 ft) above sea level, and while much of its border is lakeshore, Uganda is landlocked with no access to the sea. Most of Uganda is covered by a plateau that gradually drops in elevation northwards. Mountain ranges and valleys mark the edges of this massive plateau.
